While we wait for the 5G networks to make our internet faster, 4G is the most recent breakthrough in the telecom communication that people can take leverage. With blazing fast connection speeds, it has allowed people who could hardly load a YouTube video stream content in 4K.
The increasing quickness of the 4G networks might have come to a halt. According to the State of LTE February report by OpenSignal, mobile carriers across the globe have been unable to take their average 4G speeds past the 50 Mbps mark. The report includes over 50 billion measurements received from more than 4.8 million devices worldwide in Q4 2017.
OpenSignal, referring to their past few reports, has concluded that the numbers have remained close to 45 Mbps and they have failed to see any sizable increase even in the top performing countries.

However, it acknowledges efforts that the telecom operators have made to increase the network coverage and improve quality. Five countries now have average 4G availability greater than 90%, including South Korea (97.49%), Japan (94.7%), Norway (92.16%), Hong Kong (90.34%), and the US (90.32%). Instead of the geographical reach, the report considers the proportion of time users can connect to a 4G network.
Talking about the 4G leaderboard, Singapore has bagged the title of the fastest 4G nation with 44.31 Mbps. On the other hand, South Korea fell in the list with its average 4G speed down to 40 Mbps from 45.8 Mbps.

Although the average 4G speeds in various countries have mostly remained stagnant, OpenSignal observed a notable increase in some European countries including Netherlands and Spain. And also in the case of US, and Canada where the numbers soared past 30 Mbps after the recent LTE upgrade by Telus.
A surprising situation is observed in the case of India, where the 4G availability is more than 86% but the average 4G speeds just make past 6Mpbs.
What can be done to bring the next speed breakthrough? 5G, maybe. But OpenSignal thinks the existing LTE technology has some juice left. Improvements can be made by upgrading 4G networks further and implementing technologies like Gigabit LTE. The firm has seen individual operators delivering more than 50 Mbps in some cities in South Korea and Northen Europe. And also, Canada’s Telus is offering average 4G downloads of 70 Mbps in Toronto.

Time-lapse in Google Earth combines 24 million satellite photos from the past 37 years to make a 4D interactive model.
